About Robert Mathis
I work with the leader(s) at various levels of an organization who want to expand and develop more thoughtful and creative responses to challenge.
I work with leaders in organizations and families.
I will work in both individual and group settings. The location and details will vary. Some contact will be person-to-person, on location in the workplace. After initial contact, ongoing contact is often by telephone. Other contact could be in retreat settings with a collection of leaders—educational and re-creational events— who want to learn concepts and principles that can make a difference in how the leader thinks about self amidst the pressures and predicaments of leading.
I work from a different view of human interaction that is grounded in Bowen Family Systems Theory. Simply put, Bowen Theory offers a way of looking at challenges from one’s best thinking, becoming more aware of the sources of reactivity, and charting a course out of the depths of one’s own unique journey.
Learning must have application in real life scenarios. I am a practical person. Other than my personal faith, nothing has influenced my everyday thinking more than my studies in Bowen Family Systems Theory. Learning to “think systems” has been the single most valuable insight in my adult life. So much so, that I dedicated six years to earning a PhD. with a focus in Bowen Theory. I know it works.
For ten years, I have worked with leaders to help them become more thoughtful in challenging situations in both their workplace and/or family. I have worked with a variety of leaders including owners of family businesses, school principals, denominational executives, pastors, and a college president.
What Is It Like To Work With Me?
If you work with me you can expect:
- To learn principles for human interaction that can provide you with an extraordinary view,
- To discover ways to manage your own anxiety amidst times of challenge,
- To think more deeply about your position of leadership and do so with playfulness,
- Someone who can listen beyond your words,
- To be challenged in your thinking with questions designed to evoke your best thinking
My job is to look with you at the dilemmas you face in your organization through your eyes and then suggest, through the lens of a practical and comprehensive theory, ways you can look differently at what you are seeing. The work will include your family diagram—sometimes called a genogram—and application of the concepts of Bowen theory. The focus is upon practical relevance in your setting. All conversations are held in utmost confidence.
