Are some of these statements true for you?
- "We have hired consultants before but we have somehow missed the substantive issues it takes to move to the next level."
- "I have no one with whom I can share the tough decisions, who can challenge me to think more deeply about matters."
- "I am reactive when I should be more thoughtful."
- "I want to lead from my strengths but I sometimes get stuck."
- "I am finding myself in a similar bind at my current position as I was in my previous one."
- Want to look beyond the quick fix,
- Want to know how to become a more thoughtful, intentional leader,
- Are in a position where they have to manage their own position amidst reactivity,
- Are willing to go for challenge vs. comfort,
- Have a desire to live from the depth of life's well,
- Have worked with a consultant/coach previously without much success,
- Are willing to make changes in how they think about their position of leadership,
- Realize that one person, changing self, can make a difference.
Is This For You? If you want to become a more thoughtful leader, if you are interested in understanding the power of your presence as a leader, and if you want to lead from a deeper sense of self then you will benefit from this work.
What I offer is a view that focuses on you and the difference your thinking makes in the organization. If you are looking for a quick fix to a dilemma, a technique that will get the results you want, a certain number of steps to success, or a personality grid that will help you figure out others, you will want to look elsewhere.
My premise: Leader(s) of an organization—be it a family or other system of people working in proximity to one another as in a business or congregation—define the direction of the organization more by their presence than by mandate, directive, or hierarchical structure. However, for the leader to understand and identify her/his presence is no small matter. Identifying the power of one's presence goes against most of what we have learned in life.
